Body fat via calipers: 25.656%

Here's my current body fat via calipers:

25.656%

measurements for fun:

P: 17, 17, 17
S: 55, 53, 53
T: 15, 16, 16

Of course, I took five measurements and threw out the low and the high for each body area. I thought it would be lower to be honest with you.

Body Fat Scale - BROKEN

BAD TIMES:

My scale registered 191 pounds today. Hmmm, either incredible news, or, alternatively -- the scale is broken. The scale is screwed up because one of the corner no longer is "springy."

I'm going to buy one off of ebay -- got outbid today.

Compelled to add an entry

Not sure why, but I feel compelled to add an entry here.

I think I did Ok today via nutrition and even exercise. It's an odd position when I ran 4.5 miles but didn't bother to get in the swim. In fact, this week I didn't swim at all, and I feel guilty about it -- though I probably shouldn't.

After all, here are this week's numbers:

Cycling: 69 miles;
Running: 4.5 miles; and
Rowing: 41,097 meters

It's not like I didn't do anything this week. After all, just riding 69 miles is more than most people do. I suppose the wrinkle in all this, is given my goals -- and my screwed up nutrition this week -- then it makes me feel bad when my weight was slightly up (as were my other numbers: body fat %s, and circumference measurements of body parts).

So, I guess I'll just keep pushing forward and hope it gets me somewhere. It seems to have gotten me somewhere already. . .

ROWING CLUB

I found a rowing club nearby in SoCal. I think I'm going to take lessons in August on how to row on the water. And maybe even participate in a competition. I just know it would be fun to get out in the water on a solo boat. I don't care about the quality, just to get out on the water would be fun. . .

218.5 - Hard To Predict

I woke up this morning and I weighed 218.5. Surely I'm dehydrated.

In fact, I rowed a half marathon last night and completely soaked the clothes I was wearing. I fell into a deep sleep and woke up at 11a. I then went out and ran 4.5 miles.

I think my next 3 weeks of the bathroom board (which measures body fat and weight daily) should show me dropping about 5 pounds, which means I may see numbers down in the low teens; the next 3 week board (roughly 07-15 to 08-07) I expect to show me below 210 pounds.

I am now of the opinion that dropping from 223 I now weigh, down to 199, will likely produce a drop in body fat of ~3-4%; I expect the sub-20% body fat won't occur until about 185-190. My current prediction for body fat (caliper) / weight connections:

200 = 21.000%
190 = 19.000%
185 = 17.500%
180 = 15.000%
175 = 12.500%
170 = 10.000%
165 = 7.500%
160 = 5.000%

Obviously, the lighter I am the harder it will be to predict body fat. It also seems clear to me that body fat decrease is an inverse relationship -- that is, the more you weigh, the less your body fat drop per pound, the lighter you are, even a 5 pound drop could have a dramatic effect upon your body fat percentage. Or so goes my hypothesis.

Sushi and Ice Cream

Despite the self-generated pep talk after my strenous MTB ride I had sushi and ice cream (chocolate peanut butter, two scoops from BRobbins). Roughly 800 calories just for the ice cream.

Bad times.

Here the link.

Failing at Goals Set Weeks Ago - But Trying to Find The Bright Side

In my mind, I’ve composed several thoughftul posts about what to do when things haven’t gone as I’ve wished in the weight loss department. But when I sit down to convert those thoughts into posts there’s a disconnect and I seem unable to do it.

In the end, this is 100% either my victory or defeat. It’s all my responsibility. Despite all of the bitching and moaning by others (and me at times) about poor genetics, the reality is, if you eat less and move more – you will naturally reduce your body fat. When you eat more (particularly of the wrong foods) and move less, it’s natural that your body fat moves the other direction. Indeed, the fact that I have lost 50 pounds demonstrates the workable hypothesis of better food choices, coupled with lower caloric intake combined with more exercise (and of greater intensities) means the body runs at an energy deficit and one naturally reduces body fat and also reduces body weight, typically.

One thing I do notice I haven’t done as much of – which I might want to reconsider adding – is the body weight exercise (push-ups, situps, crunches, burpies, etc.). Those have been absent from my routines for the past six weeks or so.

But I think, most importantly, whenever a system breaks-down one must immediately “track changes” – that is, let’s look at what has changed to try to determine whether that change can logically be the cause of the breakdown of the system.

Changes:
• eating handfuls of chocolate;
• under stress at work, while sitting in front of large groups of people formulating questions;
• Eating sandwiches rather than salads;
• Eating more than I should, arguably;
• Not tracking what I’ve been eating with regularity;
• Fewer smoothies;
• Fewer workouts;

EXERCISE – THOUGHTS

My exercise numbers for 2005, mostly stand as follows:

Exercise / distance; workouts - hours
Swim: 66,000 yards; 27 – 22.7
Bike: 1127 miles; 69 – 73.4
Run: 187.1 miles; 48 – 32.4

Rowing: 425,000 meters; 53 – 34.4

In fact, here’s what I wrote on January 5, 2005:

DISTANCES

My thought is to set a goal of 300% of the distances completed for 2004. That would mean roughly:

Cycling: 3,000 miles; (approx. 65 mpweek [46 weeks available training]);
Running: 340 miles (approximately 7.4 mpweek [46weeks available training]); and
Swimming: ~120,000 yards (approximately 2600 yards/wk [46 weeks available]);

Interestingly, I’ve maintained these numbers PLUS also held my own in the rowing area: some 425,000 meters. I didn’t even consider rowing as an additional exercise until February/March when I bought the C2 rower.

So I suppose I SHOULD reward myself for maintaining the exercise portion of my exercise routine. Though, for full disclosure, the averages have dropped slightly over the past few weeks – but to be expected given the craziness of working 8-5; school from 6-8/6-9 mon-thu. I’m still getting the majority of stuff in which is good and I should commend myself for the efforts.

NUTRITION.

But as I’ve learned exercise alone is never enough. Another huge component part for healthy living is eating well – for me, I think, that means tons of veggies and fruit and light on everything else. Try not to eat empty calories.

The truth is I’ve failed at this for the past 2-4 weeks. I can do better. Much better. And I will.

WEIGHT LOSS GOALS

The weight loss goals for this week, were:

215.9 / 218.6 / 221.4

Instead, my weighted average 5-day weight was 223.9.

So I’m above even my most pessimistic goal for the week by 2.5 pounds. This is frustrating but not insurmountable.

BODY FAT GOALS

The body fat goals for the week ended are:

24.78%
23.15%
21.53%

Unfortunately, I’m above all of these goals as well: Current body fat measurement via calipers: 25.99% (so above by ~1.21%). However, the Tanita scale gives me a weighted average of 23.5%. . . but that sort of doesn’t count.

AT this point, I’m unwilling to adjust my goals to an easier standard. I think you can double down and refocus and make everything work.

Now, it’s simply time to implement that plan.

Indeed, I’m tempted to go ride a mountain, come down and row a half marathon for time.

The Cheat Days Ruin The Week

I track multiple chunks of data, namely:

* daily weight;
* daily tanita body fat %;
* caliper body fat percent (1-3x/week); and
* Measurements of circumferences around my body.

In the past week, all of these measurements have risen. WRong direction. Bad times.

Often, although one measurement may rise instead of fall, other measures will fall instead of rise. A general comfort that all is not lost -- and that though one number may be out of whack this week, the overall direction is still positive. I've never had all indicators go in the wrong direction.

This week makes sense though: My eating habits were much more poor. Lots of sandwiches from 7-11; lots of chocolate out of public boxes; and donuts on one day. Interestingly enough, there might be as much info in what I didN'T east as opposed to what I did: Namely, little salad, and not much fruit (nor smoothies). This strikes me as something to keep a mental note of.

In the end, I need to, as usual, up the veggies and the fruits and easy on the chocolates. And workout like crazy.

I also bought an abs book today. I felt a little gay doing it -- but it is my overall goal :-).

Onward.

Cheat Day

I suppose today and the last few days have been cheat days -- though not necessarily intentionally.

I dug into the chocolate with some vigor yesterday, only because it was available to me in a bin at work. I hate those fucking bins.

Today was worse: Both chocolate and victory donuts (don't ask). I probably had 15 mini donuts and then ate probably 12-15 pieces of mini chocolate. Neither good for me, nor is either moving me towards my "ab goal."

But, it's time to bear witness, own up to what I've done and move forward. . .

Caliper Body Fat: 24.896%

Caliper body fat today reveals:

24.896%

Still a ways off of my stated goal of under 20% body fat.

I have hovered at 222-224 pounds for the past week or so.

S: 54, 51, 43, 42, 51
T: 16, 19, 17, 17, 18

I always remove low and high and the remaining three are plugged into the web calculator.

Triathlon - sat., 06.18.2005

I did a full on international distance triathlon saturday. Although the run was only 5.5 miles instead of 6.2 miles it should have been (which, for the record does annoy me).

SWIM
The swim seemed long and was an out and over swim. It was crowded at the beginning, so I laid back a bit, knowing I would get unfettered access toward the end of the swim, and I did. Unfortunately, the swim was also poorly marked -- the last boy was out in the middle of the lake -- and we weren't required to swim around it, only by it -- some 300 yards away. It was quite confusing.

BIKE
I said to someone as I exited transition "that's it, I think I have slowest transition wrapped up." I probably did about 4 mins or so. But I'd rather simply be comfortable (with a dash of vanity) then be fast in transition. The ride was about 24.2 (instead of the required 24.8) -- but nonetheless pretty long -- and there were some decent hill climbs as well. I averaged ~17.3 mph.

RUN

The run was both short and long. Short because it should have been 6.2 miles; long because I haven't been running all that much. I did stop at one point and go to the bathroom. I just know that if I were 40-50 pounds lighter, I'd be an ultracompetitive runner in triathlon. The great irony is that running used to be my WAY strong event.

I also think my attempt at substituting rowing for running, is still a workable and intelligent solution.

OVERALL

Overall, it was a pretty good day -- although about 3 hours of heavy activity. I'm not sure I want to do more internationals, rather than sprints. I think part of it is the sprints are less competitive, and that sort of works better for my competitive nature.

Candy / Rowing

I had a bunch of candy today -- and some last night -- and during proceedings yesterday. Just handfuls of candy yesterday during session; and today, I had more: A reeses cup (big deep one) and a hershey smore. I shouldn't do it. It's bad for me -- and goes against my goals.

ROWING
On a better note I reached 400,000 meters today. 600,000 meters until the million meter mark -- obviously. I enjoy the rowing -- it's quite odd. I can just listen to loveline while I crank away on it. And, indeed, in about 40 mins today -- with about 8,500 meters of work, I burned 530 calories. That's pretty decent. (apparently it would take about 2500 calories to row a marathon (500 * 5 [5 * 8,000 = ~40,000 meters]).

It'll be fun to push forward to 1,000,000 meters.

25.824% Body Fat Via Calipers

Today I posted a 25.824% body fat via calipers. Lower than before.

The goals are as follows:

6/12/2005
25.25%
24.08%
22.92%

6/19/2005
25.01%
23.62%
22.22%

Therefore, I'm a bit above my goal of 25.25% -- and by this weekend, if the number remains the same, 0.81% higher. Either that, or I need to massively adjust down the goals.

Performance leading to triathlon

I'd like to have a good week of training this week, even though it is technically a rest week. The week has started out well, because I was able to get two workouts in today. Up on the bike for a VERY fast 16 miler -- I raced against my prior race time of 21 mph, and I pulled about an 18 mph average today (though, max 2.1% grade, and mostly downhill).

I feel good about the diet and everything else. I'd like to pull it all together for June/July and just get it all to work together to get me below 200 pounds for beginning school -- and below 20% body fat at that time as well. I think I'm headed in the right direction -- despite a poor showing the last week.

I'm still digging the rowing, I've put in nearly 400,000 meters so far. And I suspect I will meet the 1 million meter row mark in another 3-8 months. I'm still a big believer in the diversity of exercise -- and that it would be good for me.

[As a side note, I saw a cool health and fitness magazine in the office with dude's with crazily developed abs]. I'd like to get there. I think it's all exercise and diet in the end.

Body Fat: 26.074%

26.074% body fat via body fat calipers. I think it's a decent number, though a bit high.

Numbers for week ending 06.11.2005

NUMBERS:

Caliper body fat 06.11.2005: 24.896%

Measurements:

N: 15.9"
B: 13.5"
C: 43.0"
UPW: 40.5"
LW: 39.25"
T: 22.0"
H: 40.0"

WEIGHT

5 day moving average: 224.6
Tanita body fat five day moving average: 24.0%

WEIGHT GOALS - COMPARISON

My weight goals for the week of 06.13.2005 were:

6/13/2005 220.3 221.9 223.6

So 224.6 is above my low goal by approximately 1lb. Imperfect, but probably OK. It also makes sense given the paucity of workouts this week, coupled with eating out with new girls and the like.

BODY FAT GOALS - COMPARISON

Goal - 6/12/2005
25.25%
24.08%
22.92%

Actual = 24.896%

Somewhere between median (24.08%) and low goal (24.08%). A bit of a ways off of the optimal goal of 22.92%.

ANALYSIS

In the end all of this makes sense to me. It was an extraordinarily light week of workouts. Instead I spent 20 hours (literally) on the phone with mostly the new girl, M. This is the time I would have otherwise spent on working out.

I think today I'm going for a flat 20-25 mile ride -- out through downtown. It'll be fun. I may run afterward.

Next week is another big tri, which will be interesting and fun, particularly with the last week of too little training. In fact, technically, I've only rowed 10,000 meters in the past week (because I swam Sunday night before then). The good news is I can get a few workouts in this weekend. Probably ride long, come home, recover, and then get up on the rowing machine again. In fact, I may do another half marathon on the rowing machine. It's low impact and burns tons of calories. . . it's good.

Sunday, probably run and ride I'd guess.

Sun-Fri - workouts while chasing girls

Though an interesting week dating wise, exercise wise it wasn't good at all.

So, Sunday night I essentially stayed up all night (literally until sunrise) with a new girl, M. Monday I went to work - and then talked with her on the phone for hours Monday night after class. In fact, I talked to her so much, that I took Tuesday off from work. I did no exercise on either MOn or Tue.

Wed, I believe class was canceled, so I came home and rowed. Thu I saw M again (immediately after class) -- so I did no exercise and again stayed up all night.

Did I mention I have my oly distance triathlon in a 7 days? I think I have enough training in the bag to pull me through but it's a bit nutty.

* * *

On a more serious note, it is an excess that needs to be managed. The excess of chasing full boar after someone -- it's a string that runs throughout my life: If some is good, more is better and all is the best. Perhaps everything needs to be done with a bit more moderation.

I also haven't compiled my food diary for the week, though I think my weight has held pretty steady.

I will go through and analyze all of the data probably tomorrow. I also hope to get a good long ride in as well.

UPDATE: C and Rowing

I ran into my mentor today at school and he gave me the usual: Hey, I didn't recognize you from behind -- you look different, have you lost weight? To which I replied: "Yea, actually I've lost alot of weight." I didn't go into the numbers and he didn't ask for them.

And, btw, this is typical of male interaction about weight. Much different than interaction as I understand it between females. I don't think one is necessarily better than the other, but they sure are different.

I actually napped for a bit tonight -- because I was still pretty tired after chasing girls for a few days. In the meanwhile, I did get up on the rowing machine and did 20x500 @2:05 or so per 500 for 10,000 meters.

Bad Mood

Bad mood.

In a bad mood this evening I suppose. It's purely my fault in the end, though surely others in the world contribute to it. I'm underfunded for financial aid for grad school. The city I'm in is expensive, and there's an upper limit so things get stretched. Predictably, my school was late disbursing financial aid this summer, so I don't yet have my check. I learned today I bounced an important check (my rent check). Probably other checks out there might get bounced. It's no one's fault but my own, and I'm willing to live with it. I also started running the numbers on my debt and it's pretty amazing. And I'm graduating a semester early.

But all of that to say, it left me without my usual energy and jump in my step. I know over the long term this stuff will be worked out. But over the short term it's a bit painful (and expensive) and a bit scary. But I need only survive another 6 months of school and then 2 months for exam preparation. Then it is out into the working world I go. . .

And ironically, I weighed in at 222 (I think) today. My lowest weight in years. Unfortunately, the black cloud of my financial situation has overshadowed that accmoplishment.

Numbers Discussion for week end Sat. 06-04-2005

A numbers discussion regarding my week ending numbers for 06.04.2005.

I ended the week with a weight of 225.4 (weighted over past 5 days). Body fat via Tanita scale as 24.5%; skinfold caliper test of 23.43%.

The body measurements were as follows:

N: 15.75
B: 13.25
c: 43.25
uw: 41.00
lw: 38.50
h: 40.50
T: 23.00

These numbers were quite similar to the numbers posted approximately one month ago

Although, my bicep size dropped from 14 inches to 13.25 inches; my lower waist dropped from 38.75 inches to 38.5 inches; and my neck size dropped from 16 to 15.75 inches.

In particular, the weight number is also an important one.

2005:
01.04 - 263.5
02.04 - 244.0
03.04 - 236.5
04.04 - 219.2*
05.04 - 230.8
06.04 - 223.5

* note: this was during my time of manipulating my scale by standing on it weird, so though I may have gained some weight in May -- probably not much and maybe no weight gain.

The goals for this week ending were as follows:
(Optimal / good / acceptable);

Weight: 222.5 / 223.6 / 224.7Actual: 223.5

Body fat: 25.48 / 24.55 / 23.62

Actual: 23.431

So this week, I have exceeded both my optimal goals for body fat via calipers and weight (using 5 day moving average). This is good!

BODY FAT: 23.431%

New low body fat via calipers in a long while: 23.431%.

25.99% body fat with calipers

Finally a decent caliper reading: 25.99%. I like it. I'd like it better if it were 19.99%. Nonetheless, it does seem to roughly track the 2-4 pounds I seem to have lost in the past two weeks since the completion of finals. Which is interesting, the numbers do always seem to work together generally, but not with any great specificity/regularity.
