The science and thinking I've read says this: forget the fad diets and focus on the basics -- sensible diet and exercise.
For me, exercise has always been fun and something I've regularly done. But, my "diet" naturally is 3-4,000 calories per day; when in reality I should be living on about 2,000 calories. Since I've been putting in about 2,000 calories (or fewer) I can see weight loss coming about.
As importantly, I also notice inches coming off of my body; my shorts seem to big as of this morning (in wrestling belts were required. By the time we were a month into the season, most of us had dropped a pant size or two and could now remove all of our jeans without the need of unbuckling them. I can now take my shorts off without undoing the snap or button.). Progress.
